(Photo: Shutterstock) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled shredded cheeses sold at major retailers, including Target, Walmart, and Aldi, due to fears of containing metal fragments.
Risk of internal injury
The FDA, in a statement issued on Monday, said the shredded cheese, produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc., was initially recalled on October 3 for containing metal fragments, which pose the risk of internal injury if consumed.
According to CBS News, the FDA’s notice covers nearly 236,000 cases of low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheese, which represents the largest portion of the recall. Each case includes between four to 12 bags of cheese.
On December 1, the FDA updated the risk level to Class II, the second-highest, meaning the chances of serious health consequences are “remote,” but there is a possibility of temporary or reversible effects.
According to the FDA, the recalled shredded cheese was being sold in 31 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Puerto Rico.

The FDA noted that the presence of metal fragments “from supplier raw material” in food can potentially cause serious injuries, including dental damage, laceration of the mouth or throat, or laceration or perforation of the intestine.”
