(Photo: AP) At least two people were killed after a small Mexican Navy aircraft crashed near Galveston on the Texas coast while carrying a one-year-old medical patient, officials said on Monday.
The plane was transporting eight people when it went down near the base of a causeway close to Galveston, around 80 km southeast of Houston, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Mexico’s Navy said four people were rescued and a search was under way for two others. It was not immediately clear who among those on board had died or who remained missing.
Four of the passengers were Mexican Navy officers and four were civilians, the Navy said in a statement to AP.
The Navy said the aircraft was on a medical mission when it suffered what it described as an “accident”.
“The incident remains under investigation,” the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post, adding that more information would be released as it became available.

The sheriff’s office asked the public to avoid the area so emergency crews could continue their work safely.
The Mexican Navy said it was assisting local authorities with search and rescue operations and shared updates on social media platform X
Officials from the US Federal Aviation Administration were expected to arrive at the crash site, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Local responders, including dive teams, drone units and crime scene investigators, were deployed to the area, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

It was not immediately clear whether weather played a role in the crash. However, the area has experienced foggy conditions in recent days.
“At about 2.30 pm, fog reduced visibility to about half a mile,” Cameron Batiste, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told AP. The fog is expected to continue into Tuesday morning. Galveston is a popular island beach destination along the Texas coast.
