The United States has offered security guarantees for 15 years to Ukraine as part of the proposed peace plan, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the latter’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Sunday.

Zelenskyy, however, said that he would prefer an American commitment for security of up to 50 years in order to restrict further Russian attempts to seize Ukraine’s territory by force. On the 15 years commitment of security to Ukraine, the US president said that an agreement on this point was “close to 95%”.

President Trump hosted Zelenskyy at his Florida resort on Sunday as the two leaders met for the third time this year. Trump insisted that Ukraine and Russia are “closer than ever before” for a peace settlement to end the nearly four year war which started after Moscow invaded Kyiv.

Among the unresolved matters, Zelenskyy highlighted the territorial issues and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant which still remain to be negotiated but little was said about the future of Donbas region.

Russia, which has previously rejected key parts of the 20-point peace plan sponsored by the Trump administration, agreed on Monday with Trump’s assessment that peace is closer, state news agency TASS reported.

In a series of posts on X, Zelenskyy wrote, “We agreed with the President of the United States that we will have strong security guarantees from the United States. At present, they are not permanent. In the documents, the guarantees are set for 15 years, with the possibility of extension.”

The Ukrainian president added, “We would like to consider the possibility of 30, 40, or 50 years. It would then become a historic decision by President Trump. The President said that the US would consider it.”

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to speak in the near future about the possibilities of finalising a peace deal. However, there wasn’t any suggestion that the Russian leader would speak to Zelenskyy.
