Indian-American lawmaker Ro Khanna. (Screengrab: X/@RoKhanna) Indian-American lawmaker Ro Khanna has condemned the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment factory worker in Bangladesh, and called on the international community to speak out against what he described as acts of hatred.
Das, 27, was lynched by a mob earlier this month in Mymensingh district over an allegation of blasphemy, and his body was later set on fire. Police have arrested about 12 people in connection with the case, according to local reports.
In a post on social media, Khanna said the killing was “horrific”. He added: “My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. We must unequivocally condemn and speak out against these vile acts of hatred and bigotry.”

The Democratic lawmaker who represents California’s 17th Congressional District. Khanna also said that such incidents raise concern about the safety and rights of minorities and called for greater attention from global leaders.
The United Nations too expressed concern over recent incidents of violence in Bangladesh.
At a daily press briefing, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said: “Yes, we’re very concerned about the violence that we’ve seen in Bangladesh,”

While responding to a question on attacks on minorities, including recent lynching cases, he added that people who are not part of the majority community must feel safe. “Whether it’s in Bangladesh or any other country, people who don’t belong to the ‘majority’ need to feel safe and all Bangladeshis need to feel safe. And we’re confident that the government will do what it can to keep every single Bangladeshi safe,”
