A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, with strong shaking felt across the capital, local media reports said.

According to Taiwan’s weather administration, the quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, and had a depth of 73 km.

Damage assessment was underway, Taiwan’s National Fire Agency said.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said that there was no tsunami threat due to the Taiwan earthquake.
