A 20-year-old student of Indian origin was shot dead near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus (UTSC), Toronto police said.
The Toronto Police Service identified the student as Shivank Avasthi. Officers were called to the area of Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road at around 3.30 pm on Tuesday following a report of “unknown trouble”, police said on Wednesday.

On arrival, officers found a victim with a gunshot wound, and Avasthi was pronounced dead at the scene, CBC Canada reported.
Investigators said the body was discovered by a person walking along the trail. Police added that they did not believe there was ever an “active shooter” in the area, according to the Toronto Star.
Toronto police said the suspect had fled the area before officers arrived. No description of the suspect has been released.
